When is the best time to have a second language acquisition? Explain why? Please include specific details or examples in your explanation.
|
Abstract Events |
Elementary school Reason1: enough free time to study; Reason2: easier to memorize new words; Reason3: good timing to stimulate interest in language.
|
参考范文 | Personally speaking, elementary school is an ideal period for learning a second language. To begin with, students usually have enough free time to have a second language acquisition, as they don’t have heavy burdens in other subjects. Additionally, it is true that children find it easier to memorize new words. You know, a relatively large quantity of vocabulary is always a foundation for effective language study. On top of that, elementary school stage is a good time to stimulate students’ interest in language, and every single language learner would agree that interest is the best teacher for second language acquisition.

Task 2 |
Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Friends can still keep their friendship when they have disagreement. Please include specific details or examples.
|
Life |
解题思路 | Agree: Reason1: Argument is normal in life; Reason2: Friendship is not closely related to disagreement. Disagree: Reason1: Disagreement hurts friendship the most; Reason2: Friends are supposed to support each other. |
参考范文 | I totally support the statement for the following reasons. To start with, I suppose argument is normal in our daily life, and it is not a big deal for most people. Therefore, having disagreements with friends will not pose a threat to friendship at all. Instead, sometimes arguing with friends occasionally could actually strengthen friendship. Apart from that, I believe friendship has little connection with disagreements. I mean, whether friendship could be maintained is closely related to other factors, such as trust and loyalty, rather than disagreements.

Task 3 |
The university doesn’t allow students to use bikes in campus. Reason1: It is unsafe to use bikes in campus; Reason2: Students should use school buses.
|
听力部分 | The woman disagrees: Reason1: The accidents only happen at night when it is not easy for students to see the roads clearly; Reason 2: The school buses are inconvenient as they run every other hour. |
Campus Life |
Part1: school’s new policy; Part 2: the woman’s opinion (disagree or agree); Part3: 2 reasons for holding the opinion.
|
参考范文 | The university doesn’t allow students to use bikes in campus as the school thinks it is unsafe to use bikes and students could use school buses as an alternative. The woman doesn’t think the new policy is a good idea. To begin with, with regard to the safety problem the school mentioned, the woman thinks accidents happen only at night because of low visibility. So as for the daytime, using bikes are totally secure. On top of that, although school buses seem a good choice for the students, the school buses only run every other hour, which is very inconvenient for the students. If students miss one bus, they have to wait for a relatively long time before they could get on the next.

Task 4 |
Dear Enemy Effect: Animals tend to attack those animals who give unfamiliar signals, but have no reaction to those familiar signals. |
When Cardinal birds feel the enemies are approaching, they usually will only attack animals with strange signals, and ignore animals with normal ones. |
Academic Lectures
|
Part1: explain the term; Part2: summarize the example provided.
|
参考范文 | Based on the reading material, we know that dear enemy effect refers to a phenomenon that animals tend to attack those animals who give unfamiliar signals, but have no reaction to those familiar signals. And the professor uses the example of Cardinal birds to illustrate the term in the lecture. When these types of birds are in breeding season, they are very likely to attack other birds. But if other birds give familiar calls, then the Cardinal birds would choose not to attack and chase after these kinds of birds. On the contrary, if Cardinal birds could not recognize the signals given by other birds, then they would just attack the birds with strange calls. |

Task 5 |
考题回忆 | Problem: The woman is invited to give a speech with regard to her paper in New York, but she doesn’t have a clue about the accommodation. Solutions: ① She could stay in the hotels, but too expensive; ② She could choose to stay in her aunt house, but it is too far away from the presentation venue.
|
Campus Life
|
解题思路 | Part1: summarize the problem; Part2: give two possible solutions; Part3: state your own opinion and give reasons。
|
参考范文 | The woman is invited to give a speech with regard to her paper in a conference of New York, but she doesn’t have a clue about the accommodation. There are two possible solutions. One is to stay in a hotel, the other is to live in her aunt’s house. Personally, I suggest the woman should choose to accommodate herself in a hotel. Although living in a hotel is a little bit expensive, the woman could handle it well by saving money. With the savings, she could also buy her lunch and take part in some activities, such as a concert. But if she chooses the latter solution, she might end up missing the dinner at the conference and the chance to meet a lot of famous people as the house is very far away from the presentation venue.

Task 6 |
Topic: two methods to resolve disagreements: ① Mediation: make a compromise after communication; ②Arbitration: make a decision after listening to the stories of both sides.
|
Academic Lectures
|
Part1: introduce two methods of resolving disagreements; Part2: explain the method of mediation; Part 3: explain the method of arbitration.
|
参考范文 | When there are some disagreements between two people, others could help them to resolve disagreements with the following two methods. The first one is mediation. For example, if two roommates argue with each other and they would turn to others for help. Then this helper could try to calm the two roommates down, and help them come up with a solution they both agree to. As a result, the two roommates would make a compromise after communication. The second way is arbitration. As for the same circumstance mentioned above, the helper could just listen to the stories of both sides first, then she or he would make a decision on whose point makes more sense, regardless of the two roommates’ opinions.
